Becoming a computer hardware engineer

The job of a computer hardware engineer is to research, design, develop, and test computer systems and components such as processors, circuit boards, memory devices, networks, and routers. If you like IT then this can be the perfect job for you. You may be able to get a job as an engineer that allows you to work within many aspects of computers and vary your day to day tasks.

The pay is often quite good for a computer engineer and you can expect to be on an hourly rate of £25-£50 per hour, especially if you are self employed.

Although there is no need for a formal qualification, many computer engineers have obtained some sort of degree in computers or computer science. Often a degree in design and technology can also be helpful.

Computer hardware engineers usually work in research laboratories that build and test various types of computer models. Most work in high-tech manufacturing firms but some do work as part on a smaller internal team within a different type of business.

As software advances, many computer hardware engineers may find it tricky to get more work, so it is always advisable to also try and work within the software side of things too.
